#1 Love, St. Valentine

                                                                    LOVE WINS!

                                           image

Let me introduce myself. My name is Valentine. I lived in Rome during the third century. That was long, long ago! At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. I didn’t like Emperor Claudius, and I wasn’t the only one! A lot of people shared my feelings.

Claudius wanted to have a big army. He expected men to volunteer to join. Many men just did not want to fight in wars. They did not want to leave their wives and families. As you might have guessed, not many men signed up. This made Claudius furious. So what happened? He had a crazy idea. He thought that if men were not married, they would not mind joining the army. So Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages. Young people thought his new law was cruel. I thought it was preposterous! I certainly wasn’t going to support that law!

Did I mention that I was a priest? One of my favorite activities was to marry couples. Even after Emperor Claudius passed his law, I kept on performing marriage ceremonies — secretly, of course. It was really quite exciting. Imagine a small candlelit room with only the bride and groom and myself. We would whisper the words of the ceremony, listening all the while for the steps of soldiers.

One night, we did hear footsteps. It was scary! Thank goodness the couple I was marrying escaped in time. I was caught. (Not quite as light on my feet as I used to be, I guess.) I was thrown in jail and told that my punishment was death.

I tried to stay cheerful. And do you know what? Wonderful things happened. Many young people came to the jail to visit me. They threw flowers and notes up to my window. They wanted me to know that they, too, believed in love.

One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father allowed her to visit me in the cell. Sometimes we would sit and talk for hours. She helped me to keep my spirits up. She agreed that I did the right thing by ignoring the Emperor and going ahead with the secret marriages. On the day I was to die, I left my friend a little note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. I signed it, “Love from your Valentine.”

I believe that note started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine’s Day. It was written on the day I died, February 14, 269 A.D. Now, every year on this day, people remember. But most importantly, they think about love and friendship. And when they think of Emperor Claudius, they remember how he tried to stand in the way of love, and they laugh — because they know that love can’t be beaten!

Love, St. Valentine

*There are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine’s Day. Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries. Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer’s daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it “From Your Valentine”. Other aspects of the story say that Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius then had Valentine jailed for defying him. In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honour St. Valentine.

#2 Life is like…

Say it in your best Forrest Gump accent. It never gets old. Life is like: A BOX OF CHOCO-LATES! Enjoy reading about the history and tradition of chocolates on Valentine’s Day. I also included some fun chocolate ideas!

image

The Meaning of Chocolate on Valentine’s Day:

While we are familiar with the tradition of giving chocolates to that special guy or girl in your life on Valentine’s Day, do you know where the tradition began? The tale of chocolate and Valentine’s Day actually goes back further than you may think. Chocolate has been associated with special events since it was originally discovered nearly 2,000 years ago. The Aztecs made special chocolate drinks that were used on special occasions. Ever since that time chocolate has been looked upon as a very special item.

In more recent history during the 1800’s in Europe, Richard Cadbury created what would become the first heart shaped box for chocolates to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Ever since then it has become a yearly tradition for couples in love all across the world.

Chocolate Ideas:

Get creative: Make her a personalized basket of assorted chocolates and gifts. You might want to visit a local chocolatier and handpick her fav’s!

Chocolate Fountain: Very inexpensive. A chocolate fountain is a great idea if you are having a Valentine’s Day get together or just a date for two. Dipping ideas: strawberries, cheesecake bites, brownies, marshmallows…etc!

 Chocolate Wine!

#3 Oh You Animal!

Believe it or not when it comes to romance, some animals know best!!! Check out these pics and video links to get amazing advice from these creatures for Valentines Day!

Take time to shop for her gift this year! If this penguin can search the entire beach for a rock, you can go to the mall. I have faith in you.

When a male penguin falls in love with a female penguin, He searches the entire beach to find the perfect pebble to present her. And when he finally finds it, he waddles over to her and places the pebble right in front of her. Kind of like a proposal…I don’t think I have heard of anything cuter than this!

Penguins also HOLLA! LOL:

#4 Don’t be the awkward turtle.

Don’t let this be you!

image

Is your first date with this person going to be on Valentine’s Day? Here are 10 quick tips for you both!

When I say don’t talk about money, I mean it. Don’t. You may not have much and that’s ok, but that’s not something that you need to disclose on a first date.

Try not to talk about previous relationships.

If you’re unhappy in your current position at work, don’t complain.

Make sure that all the conversation doesn’t revolve around you.

Take it slow and don’t be needy, think of this first date as the start of a new friendship. After all your potential significant other needs to be your best friend too right? There is no need for the immediate spouting of sonnets and poems, if you catch my drift. There really is no point in stressing or sharing your desire for some kind of immediate commitment.

If you didn’t go to college or some kind of post high school institution that is ok. But I wouldn’t recommend telling anyone that you dropped out of school/college because “school just isn’t your thing” or that you felt like you weren’t learning anything. Telling someone that you basically quit at something isn’t exactly the most impressive thing you can say.

7) Don’t lie to impress. What if this really takes off? Don’t ruin it before it starts! :)

8) Don’t judge to quickly. Some people can be a little shy when getting to know someone. Don’t write them off if you don’t completely “hit it off” on the first date.

9) Be tastefully vulnerable. People like to talk to people that are honest and don’t hide their true selves. When you can be yourself, you free the other person to be themselves!

10) RELAX AND HAVE FUN!

Let this be you!

#5 Go the distance.

image

“And ever has it been that love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation.”
- Kahlil Gibran

Valentine’s Day is coming up soon, and while many people don’t like to think about it, you might want to celebrate it in your own way with your long distance sweetheart.  This holiday is quite commercial, but deep down, there are many people who celebrate because it is about celebrating the person you love, most frequently the person you love romantically.  If you have a long distance boyfriend, or a long distance girlfriend, this might mean some planning. Here are some idea’s to make this Valentine’s Day special, even if you are “worlds” apart.

“I would walk 500 miles.” Go the distance! Nothing like a surprise visit!  Crazy right? Sometime’s in life you have to take a risk…and what better risk  than love? I would recommend this only if you are in a serious relationship  and have a place for your dog to stay while you’re gone. :)

Candlelight Skype date: Get creative! Email each other a recipe, cook,  dress up, open a gift from one another, and eat by candlelight!

Care package: Put in romantic and silly little things like those snack cakes shaped like hearts, a card, as well as other items that they will enjoy or find romantic.  But if your long distance relationship is just a matter of the two of you being far away, like Internet relationships, then you might want to find something unique online to let you send a gift to someone special.

Send an E-card: Make it personal & free!

Make a collage: Put together a few pictures of yourself, your home, your life. Give your partner an idea of what it’s like to spend the day with you. Mail it to them or if you are really budget conscious scan it and email it.

Let him or her know that you’re thinking about him or her.  It’s not about what you get, but the thought that you put into it that matters, and that is more important than any gift.  Even if all you send is a card, at least you took the time to let him or her know that he or she matters to you.  So celebrate Valentine’s Day together, even if you are a continent apart!

#6 Candlelight Surprise

image

Say I love you by surprising her with a candlelight dinner! Simple but classy. Here are some tips to make her the perfect candlelight dinner this year:

Decorate the walk-in area with rose petals and have soft music playing.

Have the table set with her favorite colors and flowers.

Dress your best!

Main Course Idea:

Filet Mignon with Mushroom wine sauce!

This steak is a great romantic meal idea, because while it’s tender and super flavorful, it’s also relatively light. Served with roasted asparagus (recipe below) and mashed or baked potato, this is the perfect recipe for a romantic dinner for two. Without all the fat of lots of butter or cream, it leaves room (and energy) for all kinds of desserts. Wink wink.

Ingredients:
2 tbsp. butter, divided
3 tbsp. shallots, minced
1/4 C. fresh shiitake mushrooms, cleaned and stems removed
3/4 C. dry red wine, divided (cabernet is nice)
5 fl. oz. beef consomme
fresh ground black pepper, to taste
2 (4 ounce) filet mignon steaks
1/2 tbsp. soy sauce
1 tsp. cornstarch
1 tsp. dried thyme
fresh thyme (garnish)

Instructions: In a nonstick frying pan, saute shallots and mushrooms in 1 tbsp butter for about 4 mins, til tender.

Add 1/2 cup of red wine and 3 fl. oz consomme. Simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove the mushrooms from sauce, set aside.

Boil wine mixture over high heat until reduced to 1/4 cup.

Combine sauce with mushrooms in bowl. Set aside. In another bowl, combine combine soy sauce with cornstarch. Set aside.

Sprinkle filets with pepper to taste. Saute steaks in remaining 1 tbsp butter over medium heat, about 3 minutes per side for a 1-inch thick steak.

Reduce fire to medium-low heat; cook steaks until desired level of doneness. Remove from pan, keep warm.

Add the rest of the red wine and beef consommé to the skillet, scraping to deglaze pan and incorporate tasty steak bits into the sauce. Bring to a boil. Boil for one minute. Add mushroom/sauce mixture, cornstarch/soy sauce mixture, and the thyme. Boil one minute, stirring constantly, until thickened.

Place steaks on plate and pour sauce over. Garnish with fresh thyme. Serves 2.

Dessert Idea:

Nutella Mousse!

I’m pretty sure there are exactly zero people out there who don’t love Nutella. Creamy and chocolatey with a soft hazelnut flavor, it’s the king of chocolate spreads. It also makes one of the best —and easiest— mousse recipes you’ll ever try. This recipe is the perfect end to this romantic meal.

Ingredients:
1 C. whipping cream, very cold
1/2 tsp. high-quality instant coffee granules
1/2 C. Nutella (or other chocolate-hazelnut spread)
Whipped cream, to garnish
Fresh raspberries, to garnish (optional)

Instructions: 1. In a medium mixing bowl, combine whipping cream and instant coffee.

2. Refrigerate 5 minutes, then stir until coffee is dissolved.

3. Stir in Nutella.

4. With an electric mixer on medium speed, beat mixture until soft peaks form. Scrape bowl occasionally with rubber spatula as you mix.

5. The mousse will be very soft here— don’t worry. It sets up as it chills.

6. Divide among 4 serving dishes. Chill at least four hours, or overnight.

7. Just before serving, garnish with whipped cream and chocolate curls or fresh raspberries, if desired.

Bon Appétit!!!
#7 Valentine’s Day Alert! Calling all Men!

image

Valentines Day?  Sorry gentlemen, this is not an “optional” holiday.

As a man you need to choose your battles wisely. That means choosing the ones you can win. In case you’re new to this, skipping Valentine’s Day is not even a thought worth entertaining. This, unlike other postcard holidays is NOT up for discussion. To a woman, how you handle Valentine’s Day is a test used to determine of how much you value her.  We all know this it’s not an accurate test; but, it is a test nonetheless. So here are a few bits of advice on how to “pass”.

HOW MUCH DO I SPEND?It’s not as much about monitory value as it is about sentimental value. Now, some women may disagree with me so KNOW YOUR GIRL, but in my opinion, those are girls you should avoid anyways. Chances are you won’t be together at this time next year anyway but if you want to maximize your chances, don’t go broke trying to impress her. Spending a lot of money is cheap to most girls. Any guy can throw money around & fool himself into thinking he is impressing girls; but to really impress her will take courage to be vulnerable, creative, and  requires unique planning.  There are plenty of ways to make the day special using less money & more thinking. But you’ll need to spend the time.

TIME TIME TIME!When possible, try planning an entire day with her.  One-on-one time is hard to find these days. Emptying your schedule for her is a great way to show her you care. Now, if certain factors get in the way such as a “job”, try being a little inventive. Leave her little notes on her mirror & car before you leave in the morning. Dinner together might be a normal event for the two of you so try cooking for her. This will take some of you a week of planning on its own, so get started as soon as possible. The main thing to remember is to do something unique to your relationship that you will both enjoy.

IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS THAT COUNT:With modern technology it has become even easier to be romantic on the move. Little tricks like cute text messages, eCards, or a recorded online video can go a long way. You can even post a status update telling everyone how much you care about her. These little things score major “good boyfriend/spouse” points.

TIP: Keep in mind Facebook is where relationships go to die; so, precede with care.

BE ORIGINAL:Nothing says “I really don’t care” like dinner and a movie. While this fantastic combo may work 364 days of the year, it won’t work today, stud. If this really is the only thing you have time for, then you may get a pass if your lady is forgiving… maybe.  If you have no excuse then it’s time once again to put on the thinking cap. Being PERSONAL is the key to everything! Try something artistic like putting together a picture album or collage of all the times you’ve shared together. Girls lovestuff like this. It’s meaningful and shows that you put some real time and effort into expressing yourself toward her. If she works a lot and has a hard time finishing chores, show up and wash her car, or mop the floor or something.  It’s important that you not be lazy; she will perceive this as indifference and you will pay dearly. Cleaning up is a huge time saver & stress eliminator for her. She’ll love it.

#8 Simply wonderful*

Have a simply wonderful casual Valentines Day date!

image

Wake up late…

Throw on some jeans…

Head to a Farmer’s Market and Explore together. Many cities now host farmers markets. The food on offer is usually healthier and fresher than store bought and it’s always interesting to check out the work of local artisans. After that check out local sights, stop in an antique store, then head to an amateur night at a coffee house. Many local coffee houses have amateur nights, where people can come in and perform or simply read their poetry. You never know what kind of performances you’ll find, so expect the unexpected. If you’re bold, you might jump in and participate!

#9 Classic Group V-Day Film Night!

image

Host a group classic movie night! Inexpensive, relaxing, and FUN for everyone! This is a great idea if you have both single’s and couple’s in your friend circle and want to include everyone! Have everyone come dressed in PJ’s to make it truly relaxing! Many people have not seen a lot of films that are more than 10-20 years old. There is a wealth of storytelling and cinema at our fingertips, especially with used DVD’s available. In many cases, your friends may have a film that they love and want to share!

“One of the most successful movie evenings was a classic comedy night. I offered to host “Duck Soup” by the Marx Brothers, and the turnout was spectacular. Most had heard of the film, but never saw it entirely. The rapid fire one liners and outrageous comedy had everyone laughing throughout almost the entire film.”

-John

Here are some suggestions:

Modern Times

The Great Race

Casablanca

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

African Queen

The Philadelphia Story

Make sure to have good food! This part can be very simple. Popcorn and drinks always make a great movie snack, and if you want to make it real simple you could stick to that. We enjoy combining movie night with a light meal so there is a little more work. A typical winter menu may include a nice salad and some homemade soup. Pulled pork, chicken salad, and pizza are favorites as well.

Dessert comes after the movie so that we can enjoy some discussion on the movie and a good dessert. Sometimes it is simple like ice cream sundaes and sometimes we go with a bit fancier desserts like a special cheesecake or pie

#10 Gifts.Choose thoughtfully!

Don’t let this be you. :)

image

“A toaster. I got a TOASTER on Valentine’s Day!”

—Kate, 25, San Francisco

“In college, my boyfriend got me a heart-shaped necklace from Tiffany’s. It was great, except that I wore the one he got me the year before every day.”

—Janice, 28, San Francisco

“My car was missing a hub cap, and my boyfriend in high school got me a new one as a Valentine’s Day present. He asked if I wanted to exchange gifts—I said yes—he said, ‘get a hammer and meet me outside!’ Isn’t that what you want to hear on Valentine’s Day from your boyfriend?”

—Mary 28, Minneapolis

When looking for a gift:

The marketing folks at the mall have decided to emblazon everything from boxer shorts to stuffed animals with red hearts, but that doesn’t mean they make great Valentine’s Day gifts. The thoughtful present is the one that counts. Take the time to listen to clues for what she or he really wants. This might be a book that they mentioned looks interesting, or if they’re a collector, something new for their collectibles shelf. Most guys would far rather have a pair of tickets to their favorite sports team than a bunch of flowers, and many girls would rather have those tickets than an impersonal heart-shaped box of chocolates.

Valentine Tradition turned into a great gift idea:

In Wales wooden love spoons were carved and given as gifts on February 14th. Hearts, keys and keyholes were favorite decorations on the spoons. The decoration meant, “You unlock my heart!” Awww…how sweet. Maybe you won’t be able to find one of those spoons, but the heart and keyhole theme rarely ever fails.

Fun Valentine’s Day Folklore:

Some people used to believe that if a woman saw a robin flying overhead on Valentine’s Day, it meant she would marry a sailor. If she saw a sparrow, she would marry a poor man and be very happy. If she saw a goldfinch, she would marry a millionaire.

So…what kind of bird do I need to see in order to marry a rich and happy sailor?
